The Elementary Shakers are an experiment utilizing the design philosophy of Familiarism. In the words of Nicholas Baker, Familiarism is the idea of “adding a familiar or subconscious interactions to an incongruous object in the effort to create an easier or more unique experience.” More on this concept can be found here.
I was always annoyed when the salt and pepper were never on the table together. My goal with this project was to build a home for the shakers at the dinner table to prevent you from partaking in a scavenger hunt for the shakers as your food cools. As a kid, I remember playing with shape puzzles. Fitting simple shapes into a wooden box. The human tendency to solve problems led me to design the Elementary Shakers. User’s intuition is required to fit the shakers into their respective positions.
